Asian Federation of Biotechnology Malaysia Chapter International Symposium (AFOBMCIS) is one of the annual events of the Asian Federation of Biotechnology Malaysia Chapter (AFOB-MC). AFOBMCIS 2022 is the 4th AFOBMCIS was organised by AFOB-MC and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), co-organised by Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL), in collaboration with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Cawangan Sarawak, Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP), Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB), Universiti Malaya (UM), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Malaysian Agriculture Research and Development Institute (MARDI), and Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP).

This AFOBMCIS 2022 was aimed to provide a platform for researchers, scientists, academicians, scholars, and industries to share knowledge and expertise in the research and development of biotechnology. This symposium helped the involvement and collaboration among participants (local and international) to keep in touch in developing biotechnology for the future.

The theme of AFOBMCIS 2022 is “Biotechnology Innovations for Sustainable Future”. Biotechnology has played a major role in shaping our future, which covers a wide range of biotechnological areas distributed into 12 technical sessions.

1. Agricultural and Food Biotechnology
2. Applied Microbiology
3. Biopharmaceutical and Medical Biotechnology
4. Biocatalysis and Protein Engineering
5. Bioprocess and Bioseparation Engineering
6. Bioenergy and Biorefinery
7. Environmental Biotechnology
8. Marine Biotechnology
9. Nanobiotechnology, Biosensors and Biochips
10. Systems and Synthetic Biotechnology
11. Tissue Engineering and Biomaterials
12. Bioindustry Promotion and Bioeducation

During this 4-days symposium, we were nourished with brilliant presentations from some of the world experts and scientists on biotechnology innovations. We managed to assemble almost 200 local and international participants. The program has been arranged into 6 technical sessions, 5 young researcher sessions, 2 sessions for poster presentation and a session for an online poster presentation to share their knowledge and expertise, ideas and opinions and showcase research outcomes in biotechnology. Our packed programme has successfully managed to address research related to the theme of the symposium which contributed to the development progress of various biotechnological innovations for our sustainable future.

During the first plenary talk by Prof Dr Neil J Rowan from Technological University of the Shannon Midlands Midwest, Ireland, he shared the disruptive innovations and technologies and the strategies that we can be applied to outreach the challenge. Our Second plenary talk by Datuk Dr Ahmad Parvees Ghulam Khadir, Director General Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB), Malaysia shared his talk on biotechnology innovations, including plant breeding as well as various approaches to overcoming the current challenge in the palm oil industry. Our third plenary speaker, Prof Dr Hyung Joon Cha from Pohang University of Science and Technology, South Korea delivered a talk on biomolecules-based innovative functional materials for regenerative medicine and drug delivery that showed us innovative marine mussel adhesive protein for biomedical and drug delivery.

This symposium invited 8 keynote speakers, 18 invited speakers together with all the oral and poster presenters, which shared their impressive findings that is, directly and indirectly, contributed to the sustainable future through biotechnology innovations. The AFOBMCIS 2022 also would like to congratulate the winners of the 3 minutes poster presentations and the Young Researcher Award.

I personally would like to thank all the participants who joined this symposium. Thank you to all the plenary, keynote and invited, and also judges and chairman for accepting our invitation. Thank you to all the sponsors IT Tech Research (M) Sdn Bhd, PLT Scientific Sdn Bhd, Waters Analytical Instruments Sdn Bhd, Shimadzu Malaysia Sdn Bhd, Business Events Sarawak, Dahlia Duta Utama (DDU) Sdn Bhd, Biotek Abadi Sdn Bhd, Pusat Tuisyen Minda Aspirasi, as well as Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) and Langkawi Development Authority (LADA) for supporting this event. Thank you to Pelangi Beach Resort & Spa for providing excellent service, a magnificent venue for the event, delicious food and all the arrangements. Thank you to Lagenda Seni Langkawi for the great performances, Kerisik Restaurant for the endless food and Journey Best Enterprise for the excursion arrangement. The greatest appreciation also goes to the AFOBMCIS 2022 organising committee, event team and editorial team for all their commitments and hard work. It won’t be a success without everyone’s contribution. Thank you so much.

Finally, what has made this symposium a success is the knowledge sharing, awareness, and conscience among all participants regarding the biotechnology innovations and the usage of biological materials to drive the country’s development is fundamental and more important.
