Obituary: Prof. Shih-Yow Huang

Dear AFOB members,

We are very sad to inform you that Professor Emeritus Shih-Yow Huang passed away on October 5, 2018 in Taipei, Taiwan at the age of 84.

After receiving his Ph.D. degree from the University of Tokyo in 1970, Professor Huang served as a faculty member in the Department of Chemical Engineering at National Taiwan University for 35 years and was the department chair from 1977-1980.

Professor Huang was an internationally renowned scholar focusing his research on bioseparation and purification, fermentation and kinetic analysis, and bioreactor design for plant cell culture. Professor Huang was also a pioneer advocating biochemical engineering research and disseminating related knowledge in Taiwan. Professor Huang received many important awards including Outstanding Research Award from the Ministry of Science and Technology (formerly the National Science Council), the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering Society of Taiwan (BEST), in honor of his long-lasting and outstanding performance and dedication to education, research and industrial development.

We are grateful for Professor Huang's distinguished contribution to teaching and research in the areas of biotechnology and biochemical engineering. We hereby express our great respect and sincere condolence to Professor Emeritus Shih-Yow Huang.
